A CALL TO ACTION..

The Petersburg Fire Department will be holding their second and final public hearing at the Indianapolis Power & Light Communications Building on Thursday March 6, 2008 at 6:30 PM. This hearing is critical to establish the community support for a grant from the State of Indiana for $150,000 towards the purchase of a new fire truck.

We had 138 residents attend the first hearing, and we were very thankful for this strong show of support. We would appreciate another strong showing at this second hearing! The better the local support, the higher the grant score.

Letters of Support to accompany the grant application and/or Donations towards the fire truck project are also being accepted at Petersburg City Hall, 704 East Main Street, Petersburg, IN 47567. All letters or support must be received by March 6.

Thanks to All…

City of Petersburg, Indiana

Help Your Petersburg Fire Department Obtain a Grant for Firefighter Training…

The Petersburg Fire Department has requested grant funding through the “Hometown Helper” grant program. This is a private grant funding source administered by the famous Hamburger Helper food company.

The Fire Department has requested a $5,700.00 grant to complete a training classroom at the fire station and to supply new training books and materials for the firefighters. Currently your firefighters do not have an adequate classroom setting in which to train using current technology. A new classroom is being constructed at Petersburg Fire Station #2 at Cherry Street. Additional funds are needed to complete the room and provide modern equipment and training materials.

How You Can Help!

The grant is applied for on an internet web site. There is a section on the website that requests letters of support from community. Follow the instructions below to lead you to the web-site where you can easily insert your brief letter of support.

1. Go to www.hamburgerhelper.com

2. At the bottom of the top banner, click on “Find a Project”.

3. Use the drop down box to select Indiana, then type into the search box Petersburg Fire Department and click on search.

4. The application will appear, you may then click on Firefighter Training on the right side of the application box.

5. Please read the department’s application, and other supporting comments then add your comments at the bottom of the page. You must check the box at the bottom of the terms & conditions section to show that you agree to the sites terms.

6. Enter your letter of support (Up to 400 characters) and then click on add your comment.

7. While all letters are encouraged, the ones that are personalized, or have extra details are likely to carry more weight than one that simply says that “I support this project”.

The Petersburg Fire Department, as a service to our citizens, is proud to utilize the Knox Box Rapid Entry System. If your home or business utilizes an automated fire alarm system that alerts the fire department then this system will save your property, provide fire department access, and prevent property damage in the event of an emergency.

Typical Knox Box

If the department receives a call for a fire alarm at your business, traditionally we only had two options. Either wait several minutes for the alarm company to notify a key holder and have them arrive at the scene, or gain access by prying open your door or busting out a window. While firefighters are waiting for a key holder to arrive, a smoldering trash can or sparking fuse box could turn into a raging fire, that may not be seen from outside the structure until it is too late. Or, an activated sprinkler system may be flooding your office or valuable files.

The fire department maintains a secure master key that opens all Knox Boxes in the coverage area. A KeySecure system is used whereby each firefighter receives their own access code that records when the key is removed and who removed it. The Fire Department’s key opens your Knox Box that is located at your home or business which contains a set of keys to your building. After unlocking your doors, the department may search your structure for the source of the alarm with no damage or time delays. While we are all used to false alarms, but we never know when a true emergency will occur.

Key Secure system

The Knox company provides a complete line of products including Knox Boxes for all types of building construction. They also offer pad-locks and other secure devices that allow the department access to your gated secure properties. For an order authorization form, you may call Petersburg City Hall at 812-354-8511. More information is also available at www.knoxbox.com.
